Only in Oklahoma... Schools Closed because it is Freezing

Seriously, as I look outside and see the left over snow, from Blizzard '09, and schools are cancelled because of the freezing temps, not snow or ice. I have heard rumors, that some schools have lack of heat, some with loss of power, and others I am sure are just closed in order to stay consistent within the areas.

So, with the lottery, that is supposed to help our children and their schools, why in the world do they not have working heaters in the school? My friend that is a Librian, said she has a space heater, due to no heat in the library. Really? Isn't the library a place that should be a warm and cozy place to go to pick up a good book and get lost in an imaginary place.

And what about MAPS for kids? Wouldn't it be easier to raise test scores, encourage children to stay in school and go to school if they had adequate buildings and a place to learn? So where is the balance, is OKC public schools really this poorly equip to conduct school in civilized manner?

When I was young, I walked 10 miles in the snow, sleet, and ice to school.. (just kidding) and we were never out of school because it was to cold! Just sayin'

Stay warm and safe and have a great day.

Our small town ISD paid a bit over $725k last year for astro-turf on the football field. When it rains, the elementary school hallways are filled with "leaky roof buckets." We can put in a million dollar football field, but the teachers only get $50 supply fee per six weeks, and the kids get rained on indoors. Texas football for ya. ;) Stay warm!!!

I agree with the lack of equipment in the schools but a major reason they are closed is not all students have parents that are able to take them to school. Some of them stand outside at a buss stop for 15 minutes waiting on the bus and with the wind chill in the negative its not safe.

Our schools are closed in Omaha tomorrow for the freezing temps...but the high tomorrow is 6 below...and that's before you factor in the windchill, which is pretty extreme right now. ugh.

I hadn't heard they closed school here today! We lost power for several hours last night and the wind was still blowing this morning. I'm wondering if they were afraid of losing power at the schools??? That's really sad if they don't have heaters that'll keep the schools warm!

To anonymous, there are ways to earn catalinas at Homeland, not sure which ones are going on right now. I will check into them, and try to write a post about them. Normally there are red tags hanging from items in the aisles that explain what catalinas are going on and explain what to buy.

Thank you very much Shannon for your response. I will be on the lookout for these in the store aisles!
